Description
Journalist Raoul Duke (Thompson's alter ego) and his Samoan lawyer Dr. Gonzo are racing through the Nevada desert in a bright red convertible towards Las Vegas. What drives them forward, however, is not the gambling in the famous local casinos, but the desire to find and thoroughly explore the mythical 'American Dream' and the 'amazing possibilities' of a consumer lifestyle. Equipped with a wide range of drugs that they are not afraid to use liberally, the central protagonists navigate various places in Sin City and its surroundings, encountering more or less bizarre characters among ordinary Americans – casino and hotel employees, police officers, and journalists. Their journey is filled with wild, unrestrained humor, psychedelic visions, and at times almost unbearable paranoia, as well as sharp and insightful commentary relating to the well-known – and often false – ideals of contemporary American society. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas represents one of the most compelling and readable testimonies to the end of the hippie era and is also a timeless text that has become a milestone in modern American literature and a foundational work of so-called gonzo journalism, of which Thompson is the father.
