This tender, poetic fairy tale follows the courage to be different, the search for one’s identity and the beauty of diversity. One day, little Mr Monster wakes up in the grey land called Monsterland and discovers that he has changed: he has turned green. The transformation sends him on an extraordinary journey through worlds of every colour—blue, yellow, red and white—before he returns home. Along the way, Mr Monster meets beings of different shapes, colours and personalities, from a melancholy blue snail and a hot-tempered red bird to a snow-covered polar bear. Each encounter broadens his understanding of the world and teaches him that difference is not only beautiful but necessary. This is a story about tolerance, deep friendship and finding beauty in the differences between us, as well as about the colours we carry inside and the changes that shape our lives. The Czech-language book received the 2001 Book of the Year award from the Polish section of IBBY for its exceptional literary and artistic quality.
