On 16 July 1990, Liliana Rivera Garza was murdered by her former boyfriend. She thus joined the long list of women who have been victims of so-called “crimes of passion”, a euphemism for femicide. After decades spent in the United States, writer Cristina Rivera Garza returns to her native Mexico to document her sister’s lost life. She gathers handwritten letters, police reports, school notebooks, voice recordings from Liliana’s friends and architectural plans, sensitively and skilfully assembling a multilayered portrait of her fate. From one specific tragedy, she creates a broader picture of the problem and takes a stand against normalised gender-based violence. Through literature, Liliana comes alive on every page, and we cannot come to terms with the fact that she is actually no longer here. The sense of wonder, outrage and loss continues to resonate long after the book has been finished.
