Description
This Czech-language novel follows an unnamed protagonist through a deranged city where people fall apart on every corner and in every tram, buildings settle their scores in gritty Wassern German, workers vomit sand on their morning journeys to the factories, and a strange being climbs into bed beside you at night. Once you have come undone, everything depends on how the sandmen put you back together, if they collect you at all. Escape from this place is possible only through alcohol or something stronger and more dangerous, such as love. Adam Tomáš’s debut alternates a merciless narrative pace with tender, fantastical passages. The author slyly winks at the reader and commands the rules of literary play and grotesque, yet this lightness does not diminish the urgency or searing intensity of the prose.
