Ninth-grader Ester seems like an ordinary girl at first glance: She lives with her dad and mom, wants to go to art school, and admires her classmate Henrietta. But soon we realize that nothing is as it seems: Ester is suffocated by her controlling mother, a tense family atmosphere, and her own insecurities. She turns her fears against herself and finds a "solution" in self-harm. Her parents remain unaware for a long time, consumed by the care of a not-so-kind but helpless grandfather and their own relationship troubles. Ester's pain is only noticed by her class teacher. She also tries to find effective and quick professional help for the girl, even as she has to deal with her own traumas. How does one actually find such help? And will it come in time? Zuzana Dostálová presents in her new novel the story of one family from several perspectives. She shows that in every seemingly happy home, there resides a silent tenant who can reliably corrode joy.
