Description

Marek lives the typical life of a student in 1980s Czechoslovakia. He attends lectures, parties, and mandatory military drills while persistently pursuing the beautiful and unattainable Anna. However, she has other concerns. She is actively involved in spreading the petition of Augustin Navrátil for religious and civil freedom – the largest action of its kind in socialist Czechoslovakia. Catholic Anna wants to campaign and gather signatures, no matter the cost. Marek is not directly involved in the petition campaign, but paradoxically, he is the one who ends up suffering the most.

The novel set in a university environment is narrated by Marek's brother based on a fictional diary of the main character. It is also inspired by the real experiences and memories of the author Martin Uhlíř. In his portrayal, the return to the 80s is far from a "nice retro" and opens up non-obvious themes of faith and different sexual orientations.
