Description
All houses hold the history of those who live in them. This one stands on the edge of a forgotten Spanish village, and its walls tell stories of voices that echo beneath the bed and of disappearances that may never be explained. Neighbors avoid both inhabitants. The grandmother spends her days conversing with the shadows that dwell behind the walls and inside the closets. The granddaughter returns to the house after an incident with the local richest family. As the mysterious plot unfolds, a suspicion creeps into the mind that the characters, the house, and the very storytelling are crumbling, as if eaten away by woodworm. In this stunning debut, the author combines dark humor with folklore and Catholic tradition. She gives the grandmother and granddaughter strong voices that alternately narrate a tale of revenge, violence, and class struggle.
