Mexican writer Fernanda Melchor knows this reality of life well. She has been describing it for many years as a journalist – for her articles, she received an award from the Mexican PEN Club. She also knows it as a woman who grew up in the Caribbean region of the country. The book has been translated into several European languages, the German translation received the significant Internationaler Literaturpreis, and in 2020, the book was nominated for the International Booker Prize.
