Description

The shaman is dead. Someone murdered her. However, it's not about who, but why. Everyone would find a reason – a botched abortion, money, drugs, humiliation, despair. The stories of the inhabitants of a remote town in the Caribbean part of Mexico are an urgent and raw testimony that rushes and flows from the novel in a stream of vulgarities, laments, and curses. It's as if all the characters want to squeeze their pain, anger, and helplessness against the world into every sentence while simultaneously refusing to give up their desire for happiness. Mexican writer Fernanda Melchor knows this reality of life well. She has been describing it for many years as a journalist – for her articles, she received an award from the Mexican PEN Club. She also knows it as a woman who grew up in the Caribbean region of the country. The book has been translated into several European languages, the German translation received the significant Internationaler Literaturpreis, and in 2020, the book was nominated for the International Booker Prize.
