Description

Demolition has a rich history in Prague, and in the last thirty years alone, dozens of buildings have been torn down in the capital, some unfit for use, while others were extraordinarily valuable. Recent victims of Prague's demolitions include Aulický's Transgas in Vinohrady and the corner building known as Kozák's House on Wenceslas Square. The publication discusses in words and images forty objects whose loss significantly damaged the heritage fund. Among the more well-known are the transformation of the skyline of Prague's Hanspaulka after the destruction of Hotel Praha, the aesthetic degradation of Klimentská Street following the demolition of Špaček's House, and the demolition of the unique mazut heating plant in the Invalidovna housing estate. However, the book also focuses on buildings whose demise did not make the headlines, such as the storage complex Na Třebešíně, the Ringhoffer, Walter, Lokomotivka, Pergamenka factories, and Praga in Karlín. The book's rich visual material includes both archival and more recent photographs taken before the buildings' demise.
