Description

Alongside the spring global health crisis, Timothy Snyder was inspired to write Sick America by his personal experience with American healthcare. Between December 2019 and March 2020, the historian struggled to return to life nearly at the brink of death while in several American hospitals. The experience was caused by fatal neglect of care. However, the author does not blame the doctors or nurses, but rather the healthcare system. In the book, he develops numerous historical, ethical, political, legal, and economic arguments for a fundamental change in American healthcare and its alignment with the European model. To the European, or specifically Czech, reader, the depiction of commercialized American healthcare will sound like a warning. Snyder attributes the blame for not only the declining life expectancy of Americans or their dependence on opioids but also for the failures during the pandemic to this system.
