Description
The first real hospital was established in Prague in 1620 at Na Františku, and it is associated with the famous scene of a teaching dissection from 1685. This institution was exclusively male, unlike the women's hospital at Na Slupi, founded by the Elizabethan order in the 18th century, shortly before the first healthcare plans for the metropolis of the Czech Crown emerged during the Theresian and Josephinian reforms. The Prague hospital landscape then experienced its greatest flourishing from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century, when key points of a sophisticated hospital system were created in the center and suburbs: the hospital at Na Bulovce, the asylum in Bohnice, the hospitals in Vinohrady, Motol, and Krč. A publication from the popular edition 'Vanished Prague' captures the transformations of this landscape, the phases of construction and modernization, as well as the period atmosphere of hospital buildings, their halls, and offices with developing medical technology.
