Description
In the South American city of San Cristóbal, a group of 32 children suddenly appears. The oldest is thirteen, they speak an unknown language, yet they are dressed in contemporary clothing. They have no leader and behave like a swarm of bees. While the group engages in minor disturbances at first, it only involves petty offenses and misunderstandings. Every evening, the children disappear into the jungle, where they likely have their hideout. However, when the head of the local social services tries to catch one of the children, the others fiercely defend him, leading to the first serious attack. The police scour the surrounding jungle for several days, but to no avail. It seems the gang has vanished for good. Then, children of the citizens of San Cristóbal begin to disappear as well. The novel by the Spanish author combines social urgency with a mysterious atmosphere, earning comparisons to the famous book Lord of the Flies and the works of Javier Marías.
