Description

Sociologist Alexander Gideon and his ex-wife Ilana begin to decipher the contents of the "black box" of their broken marriage seven years later. They want to find out why their once passionate but unstable relationship failed. A months-long exchange of letters, telegrams, and other messages, which gradually involves Ilana's second man, a rebellious son, or Alexander's lawyer, draws the reader step by step into their increasingly sharp confrontation. Although they are all bound by a strong emotional bond, they are still unable to overcome the barriers of bias and irreconcilability. This also applies to their political and religious views, through which Amos Oz provides a testimony about the contradictory face of modern Israeli society. His novel quickly garnered significant attention after its release, was translated into eleven world languages, and was awarded, among others, the French Femina Prize.
