Description
While grandmother Marie welcomes the Soviet occupiers with borscht, the other grandmother Irena vomits at the sight of Lenin's photographs, which her grandson Matěj must cut out of the newspapers before each of her visits. Matěj's family background couldn't be more contradictory. His grandmothers represent the poles of Czech character and experience, yet there is a peculiar understanding between their families. This is despite the fact that grandmother Irena curses the communists in polished French, uncle Míla grows tomatoes shaped like five-pointed stars, and after Matěj joins the Pioneers, aunt Daniela advises him to dismantle the organization from within. This constellation shapes Matěj's life and adolescence in communist Czechoslovakia, from which he manages to travel for a time beyond the Iron Curtain, where he also discovers the dark side of freedom. Šabach's Grandmothers are a family chronicle in which socialism and bright tomorrows are viewed from the dining table and then crash in the ridiculous fates of its powerless heroes.
