Description
1895: The poor Jewish woman Tereza loses her only daughter Klára, the fruit of a forbidden relationship with a wealthy man. The barely born baby is ripped from her arms and taken from a remote village somewhere on the Hungarian-Slovak border to distant Pressburg. The only anchor in her life remains the house in the middle of the apple orchard – the best thing she has left from her marriage to a violent rural teacher. Yet she cannot stop worrying about the question: Will she ever see her little girl again?
2014: Simona is the youngest member of a family of women who have inhabited the old country house surrounded by an apple orchard for five generations, defying wars, poverty, and human malice. Now she returns to its walls after quitting her job, leaving Bratislava, and burning all her bridges behind her. In her childhood home, she prepares to think and organize her life. And although she still doesn't know what she is actually looking for... a whole new world will open up to her.
Six historical periods and six old varieties of apple trees frame a rich novel mosaic, in which a charming and touching story intertwines with an authentic picture of life in the Slovak countryside. And there is also a recipe for a sweet novel ending: Angelina's magical apple pie.
