A historical novel about two generations connected by war, love and art begins with a phone call, a discovered identity card belonging to a Nazi soldier, and a handwritten sentence that unleashes a storm within its young finder in 2019: “Hannah, girl No. 37. G. Wolf.” The name Wolf becomes Hannah’s main clue as she delves into the life of her grandmother, who experienced the Second World War as a child in Nazi-occupied Italy and never told her granddaughter about the family odyssey. Past and present meet in Florence, the city of bridges over the Arno, which witnessed Nazi cruelty and barbarity in 1944. It was also a place where courageous men and women saved the lives of Jews, partisans and others caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, while also protecting precious works of art and cultural heritage. The novel brings to light the forgotten story of German consul Gerhard Wolf and the events whose consequences remain a warning today. It is also a tribute to a man who, despite the risks, helped those around him and saved Florence’s most famous bridge, Ponte Vecchio, from destruction.
