Description
On the occasion of the 600th anniversary of the outbreak of the Hussite Revolution, we remember that six hundred years ago, the Hussite Revolution began with the throwing of New Town councilors out of the town hall window. Shortly thereafter, Czech King Wenceslas IV died. His younger brother and legal heir, the Roman and Hungarian King Sigismund of Luxembourg, could not take the hereditary throne due to the unrest in the country, and the first crusade to Bohemia ended in failure. The book by the well-known popularizer of history, Jan Bauer, guides us through the complex and turbulent period of the Hussite Wars. He strives for a serious and impartial interpretation of a time that has sometimes been hailed as the most glorious period in Czech history and at other times condemned as years of disruption and chaos. The author leads us to 1437, when Emperor and King Sigismund died, whose diplomatic skill managed to end the period of the Hussite Wars. However, the country remained divided between the Hussites and Catholics. The book is accompanied by portraits of the most significant figures of that time, such as Jan Želivský, Jan Žižka of Trocnov, Prokop Holý, Čeněk of Vartemberk, Jakoubek of Stříbro, and Oldřich of Rožmberk, as well as a chronological overview and a brief description of significant Hussite battles.
