The starship Titan continues its exploratory mission beyond previously charted space. The further it gets from Federation space, the more Captain William Riker and his crew look forward to fulfilling the true mission of Starfleet: seeking out new life and discovering new civilizations.

However, when the Titan encounters a "shallow"—an unknown spatial anomaly—it loses its warp drive. The Titan inadvertently finds itself on a battlefield, where it discovers a field of wreckage and remnants of starships. As the crew searches for survivors, they come across a ship that apparently never housed any living beings. The away team manages to extract the computer core in an effort to find answers. Once they activate the device, it turns out to be not just an ordinary computer, but an active artificial intelligence.

It refers to itself as SecondGen Blue-White, originating from a civilization composed entirely of sentient computers, known as the Guardians. Long ago, these artificial intelligences were created to be the first line of defense against the Destroyer—a powerful destructive force against which generations of machines waged an unending war in an effort to stop the threat.
