This Czech-language collection of newspaper commentaries and other texts from the Sinopsis project examines Czech-Chinese relations over the past decade, from Miloš Zeman’s naïve expectations of “economic diplomacy” to its collapse following the downfall of the Chinese company CEFC and the disappearance of its chairman and the president’s adviser, Jie Ťien-ming. It also covers the subsequent retreating manoeuvres of the local pro-Beijing lobby, covert attempts to “rationalise” discussion of China, and the so-called mask diplomacy. The book surveys a decade rich in colossal mistakes, glaring conflicts of interest, affairs and scandals that should not be forgotten. Selected contemporary texts are placed in a broader context through concise overviews of important events since the Sinopsis project began in 2016. This historical panorama sometimes develops into a social panorama, while also documenting the healthy scepticism and resilience of the Czech public towards the ill-considered plans of some of its political representatives.
