Description
The Czech-language historical novel is set in Britain in AD 60, when Roman rule over the province is fragile and Emperor Nero in distant Rome remains unaware of the danger. Clashes with hostile tribes bring chaos to the west, prompting Governor Gaius Suetonius Paulinus to assemble a large army. Prefect Cato is placed in command of one cohort, while Centurion Macro is assigned to lead the veterans in Camulodunum. Suetonius ignores warnings that the poorly fortified colony will fall if only a remnant of the army remains in the lowlands. When the king of the previously friendly Iceni dies, his widow Boudica takes the throne. After her proud kingdom is subjected to Roman plunder and annexation, Boudica, a woman with a warrior’s heart, calls for the emperor’s death. As bloodshed erupts, Macro and Cato must each fight relentless battles against enemies who would rather die than submit to Roman rule. This is the twenty-first volume in Simon Scarrow’s Eagles of Empire series.
