Description
The story of Catherine Howard, the fifth wife of King Henry VIII, is one of the most tragic in English history. A girl barely out of childhood shoes, brought to court by her ambitious family, she captivated the king with her charms and beauty. She could sing, danced beautifully, loved court festivities, and when she married the aging king, eager for an heir, in 1540, she fully enjoyed her privileged position. Had she given birth to a son, her triumph would have been complete. The smitten Henry lavished affection on her and repeatedly told everyone he met that Catherine was his sun, his rose without thorns. However, her past held shadows of which he was unaware, and that past increasingly reminded Catherine of itself in dangerously persistent ways. Yet the girl could not help herself and kept playing with fire. The king was to learn that those who pluck roses without thorns must reckon with the fact that they will get burned.
