The plot of the new story takes place at the turn of the 2nd century AD and continues with the further fate of the hero Marcus Valerius Aquila, who seeks justice for the death of his family at the hands of imperial assassins. Driven by a desire for revenge, Marcus finds himself in the heart of the chaos that shakes the very foundations of the empire. Marcus and his Tungrians narrowly escaped a trap set for them by the imperial chamberlain Cleander deep in the forests of Germania, and they receive orders to march into Gaul, ravaged by the rampage of bandits led by the self-proclaimed leader Maturus. The devastation left in the wake of the bandits threatens to escalate into a much more serious problem, as military deserters and escaped slaves join the bandit groups: a real uprising looms in the air after decades of peace. For Marcus, escaping Rome brings relief from painful memories, but the young centurion soon realizes that danger is still on his heels. The punitive expedition is led by the praetorians, whom he hates with all his heart. What will happen when they uncover his true identity?
