Description
Eleanor of Aquitaine was one of the most prominent and simultaneously most controversial female figures of the Middle Ages. She was beautiful, intelligent, and headstrong, and during her lifetime, various, and by no means unfounded, spicy rumors circulated about her. She grew up at the uninhibited Occitan court, where famous troubadours performed, and it was even claimed that she presided over courts of love. She first married French King Louis VII and then English King Henry II, with whom she bore sons Richard the Lionheart and John Lackland. She lived to the age of eighty-two, but she only overcame the adversities and tragedies of her younger years in her advanced age, becoming practically the sovereign ruler of England.
