Description
At the beginning of the year 41, Rome is in turmoil. Sabinus and members of the Praetorian Guard, led by Sabinus's brother-in-law Clement, have assassinated Caligula and declared Claudius as emperor. To prevent chaos from breaking out, Claudius's freedmen Narcissus, Pallas, and Callistus are trying to restore order as quickly as possible. However, the drooling and limping Claudius is merely a caricature of his brave ancestors Caesar, Tiberius, and Germanicus and cannot rely on his military successes. Therefore, his freedmen are trying to secure him a quick victory. Pallas suggests that the emperor's position could be strengthened by finding the eagle lost by the Seventeenth Legion years ago in Germania, followed by a successful invasion of Britain. Vespasian and his brother Sabinus, tasked with finding the standard, soon discover that they have entered a power struggle among Claudius's advisors, and someone is trying to prevent them from successfully completing their mission.
