Description
Dolores Claiborne lives in the village on the small island of Little Tall and earns a difficult living as a housekeeper for wealthy Vera Donovan, who comes to stay at her island home every summer. Adaptable Dolores grows accustomed to Vera’s domineering nature, and over time the two women begin to get along reasonably well. When the old and sick Vera dies after many years and leaves all her property to Dolores, the villagers believe that Dolores murdered her. In a compelling confession to the police, Dolores denies killing Vera, but the interrogation reveals other dark circumstances from the troubled life of the main character. This exceptionally gripping novel by Stephen King, written as the monologue of a woman pursued by her past, differs somewhat from his other work. The usual supernatural element is represented here by a solar eclipse, which plays an important role in the story.
