Description
Gwendy's Button Box is another work by King set in the fictional Maine town of Castle Rock. This time, however, unlike his other works, it is a relatively short novella, written in collaboration with Richard Chizmar. At the beginning of the story, Gwendy is 12 years old. She is a bright girl who struggles with weight issues, which she manages to cope with through willpower and discipline. One day, a mysterious man dressed in black approaches her in the park and gives her a unique and dangerous gift for unknown reasons – a magical box with levers and colorful buttons. By pressing the levers, the box produces either rare silver dollars or incredibly delicious chocolates. The colored buttons are destructive and symbolize different continents, the potential destruction of which is now fully in Gwendy's hands. She gradually begins to understand the responsibility that comes with the gift. After ten years, she is relieved when the mysterious stranger frees her from this responsibility and chooses someone else.
