Description
This Czech-language novel is set in Plzeň at the turn of the 20th century, when the growing industrial city draws in workers, faces Czech-German tensions and demands for better working conditions. During the First World War, Plzeň becomes an important arms centre, while hunger riots and strikes reveal the inhabitants’ growing dissatisfaction. In this unsettled world, Julie Šetnerová grows up in wealth, in an imposing villa with her hypochondriac, self-absorbed mother and distant father. Intelligent but emotionally starved and without compassion for others, Julie ruthlessly interferes in the lives of her half-siblings after discovering the identity of her real father, determined to destroy everything they hold dear. Still longing for acceptance and vindication, she eventually receives a harsh lesson from fate. How high a price will she pay for her mistakes, and can anything still be repaired?
