Description
It is the year 1137 and the prior of the Benedictine monastery in Shrewsbury decides to acquire the relics of Saint Winifred, which rest in Gwytherin, a remote village in the Welsh mountains. Brother Cadfael joins the expedition, tasked with interpreting for the locals as a native Welshman, but upon arriving in Gwytherin, he discovers that the Benedictines' offer has divided its inhabitants into two irreconcilable camps. The cunning, wise, and worldly Cadfael is therefore not at all surprised when the desire for the relics leads to the death of the most vocal opponent of the transfer of the remains, the nobleman Rhisiart. Some say he was pierced by a mysterious arrow shot by Winifred herself, but Cadfael knows well that a mortal hand held the bow, so he resolutely sets out to investigate. In his search for the murderer, he gradually uncovers a story of love and justice, in which the price for sin could be higher than anyone would be willing to pay...
