Description
The book 'Non-Places of Cities' explores the theme of all the neglected, fleeting, and overlooked spaces in cities from various angles. Some non-places arise from haphazard construction, while others simply lack a reason for people to stop there. Some irritate and deter us, while in others we find an escape from the predictability of public space. In the essayistic chapters, the author draws on key sources from the fields of architecture, urbanism, and exact urban studies, as well as philosophy, sociology, economics, and geography. The narrative 'stops' that introduce the essayistic chapters allow for a broader perspective on the issue. Rob settles into an unused space at a railway crossing on the outskirts of London. Chang abandons traditional role-playing and begins sorting plastics, living in close proximity to their dirt and smell. For Rami, the refugee camp is a prison with a weary hope of escape. But there are also many others for whom the need for a relationship with a place is essential. Through a place, its history, and character, we discover what is called home, 'our place' in the world. Are non-places part of the natural development of cities and a necessity in the era of flows and networks, or are they rather a consequence of our failure and helplessness?
