Description
Veltruský's study was first published in 1942, but its then form was censored in many places. Our edition represents both a return to its authentic form and, thanks to the commentary by Ivo Osolsobě, an important reconstruction of the author's conceptual foundations, which makes it possible to subsequently understand his other exile works. Veltruský applies the structural methods of his teacher J. Mukařovský to the specific material of dramatic literature, both Czech and world, and thinks about drama not as a form outside language but as a part of verbal art. The aforementioned commentary by Ivo Osolsobě provides not only an informed analysis of Veltruský's theoretical views and approaches but also introduces the author's life both at home and in exile.
