Description
The strength of Václav Havel's intellectual and political legacy is felt not only in the Czech Republic, but also in Central Europe. As a playwright, essayist, and dissident, Havel was regarded as a moral and intellectual authority both during normalization and in the West. After 1989, leading political, cultural, and spiritual figures from around the world regularly met with President Havel, not only due to state duties but also because they often sought him out themselves. Václav Havel remains a living figure in the Western memory even today. The Václav Havel Foundation Library in New York has set out to map this memory at least partially through oral history. The result is remarkable interviews with personalities such as diplomat Madeleine Albright, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, historian Timothy Snyder, and musician Suzanne Vega.
