Allies in Normandy, in the Protectorate Darkness Germany still occupies most of continental Europe. The Third Reich is waging total war and continues to evoke dark demons. The last months of World War II and the Protectorate are a time of accelerated time, a cluster of dramatic events and the resolution of several stories. Some die from exhaustion at the end of the war, others take their own lives while surrounded by enemies, and others cowardly flee. Four documentary stories tell four Czech tales. The fates of unassuming heroes, but also their pursuers, tormentors, and murderers. The first recounts the story of the arrest, the struggle through concentration camps, and the death of painter and writer Josef Čapek. The second story presents the dramatic life journey of Czechoslovak parachutist Vladimír Hauptvogel, dropped into the Protectorate's lion's den as part of the CHALK parachute group during Easter 1944. It is complemented by a short story describing the last months of Lieutenant Josef Šandera's life, dying for sixty days in a hospital after attempting suicide while surrounded by the Gestapo. The protagonist of the last story is Josefina Napravilová, a woman who searched for Lidice children across Europe after the war.
