Description

An original play inspired by the life story of the Brno composer and conductor Vítězslava Kaprálová (1915–1940) through the eyes of another Brno native, writer Kateřina Tučková. Vitka is a story about the dizzying rise of a young talented woman who managed to assert herself in a field still predominantly reserved for men. Her life was a fascinating mix of exceptional talent, diligence, and tenacity, but also of free-spiritedness that shocked those around her. She died at the tender age of twenty-five, cut off from home by the war in southern France's Montpellier. By that time, however, she had already completed her studies in Brno, Prague, and Paris, composed around forty acclaimed works, conducted significant European orchestras, and was both a life and creative partner of Bohuslav Martinů, with whom she formed a notorious love triangle alongside his wife, Charlotte. Or perhaps a polygon, considering her numerous lovers, including well-known representatives of the interwar avant-garde who were residing in Paris at the time. Had she survived, she would have been one of the most famous Czech women.
