Description
Despite the considerable attention devoted to the works of Bohumil Hrabal, there are very few books that emphasize a detailed analysis of his key literary works (in the presented book, these are: I Served the English King, Loud Solitude, and the early novella Jarmilka). Such an analysis can help liberate Hrabal from journalistic clichés, such as the pub storyteller, the raconteur, the chronicler of various professions. Hrabal is not in the least an authentic chronicler of life, but a passionate writer who strives to defend the right to creative freedom under the difficult conditions of supervised literary production. The analysis of editorial reviews from the time of normalization also attests to how distinctive, literarily refined, and autonomous a writer Bohumil Hrabal was. It is evident from this that it is shortsighted to overlook this part of Hrabal's work. Not only did he write it during his peak creative period, but it is also in this period that he becomes an authentic writer.
