In January 2014, I was diagnosed with cancer. However, the book Moving Sands is surprisingly not about death and destruction, but about what it means to be a human being. I have traveled from childhood to the present day, recounting matters that have had a defining influence on me, as well as the people who showed us new possibilities. I write about women and men I have not met but wish I had. I write about love and jealousy, about courage and fear. And about what it is like to live with a life-threatening illness. This book also tells the story of painters from forty thousand years ago who chose the darkest places in caves for their art. Or about the scary monsters we have always tried to keep in the deep caves beneath Swedish soil. It is a book about humanity and how I lived my life. And last but not least, it is also about the joy of living that returned when I managed to dig myself out of the moving sands that nearly pulled me under. - Henning Mankell
