Description
This Czech-language book examines the wartime story of the three Mikš brothers from Janov near Rakovník after the eldest, Arnošt Mikš, landed in his homeland as a parachutist in May 1942. A member of the ZINC parachute group, sent to the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia by the foreign resistance leadership in Great Britain, he found willing helpers among gendarmes and ordinary citizens, some of whom paid the ultimate price for their assistance. In a tragic twist of fate, members of the same gendarmerie unit that had helped him were later forced by the circumstances of the time to take up arms against him, a man who had come to fight for the freedom of their common nation. The author assesses the tragedy from a historical perspective, presents several of those involved in a wider context, and also examines the clash between the parachutist and the Křivoklát gendarmes from a policing perspective.
