This Czech-language factual history examines the activities of the Czechoslovak financial guard between 1919 and 1938. Although the corps is chiefly associated with the fighting in the borderlands during the autumn of 1938, its main task throughout most of the First Czechoslovak Republic was combating smuggling. The book explores the reality behind romantic notions of smugglers shaped by legends of Nikola Šuhaj, revealing a struggle that was often literally a matter of life and death, especially in the eastern regions of Czechoslovakia. Arranged year by year, it follows events involving the financial guard along the Austrian, Bavarian, Saxon, Silesian, Polish and Hungarian borders, with Carpathian Ruthenia covered separately. It includes 961 stories and incidents from 1919–1938.
