Description
The crash of an American bomber near Víska on 5 March 1945 is one of the overlooked events of the final months of the Second World War. Robert Hoyt Warren, the aircraft gunner in the crew led by pilot Ralph Wade Kittle, was killed. It was one of the last losses of an American bomber over what is now the Czech Republic. The book examines whether the Flying Fortress was shot down or crashed because of poor weather, and describes air operations over the Frýdlant region, where Víska lies, during the final year of the war by the American, German and Red Army air forces. It also covers balloon flights, German airship overflights of Liberec, air transport from Růžodol airfield, and the activities of the Liberec Gendarmerie Air Patrol under the command of the future General Josef Jaške during the First Czechoslovak Republic, as well as the occupation of the Liberec region in October 1938.
