With the development of tank armies, the question of combatting this type of military technology became increasingly pressing. Given that standard towed cannons did not allow for rapid maneuver warfare against armored vehicles, the idea of mounting them on suitable tracked, semi-tracked, or wheeled chassis was born. Thus, a new type of ground armored vehicle emerged, referred to in Czech as tank destroyers. Their first generation consisted of machines armed with anti-tank guns of various designs, but over decades of development, machines with recoilless guns, guided missiles, and in recent decades, vehicles combining the capabilities of deep reconnaissance, fire support, and combat against armored vehicles have also appeared. The book on tank destroyers is another in a series of publications documenting the development of individual types of armored technology from its very beginnings to the present day.
