Since the beginning of the twentieth century, two weapons have been intensively developed that would forever change the nature of modern warfare. One was aviation and the other was tanks and other types of armored ground vehicles. It was only logical that both types of weapons would clash in wars. While aircraft were increasingly equipped for attacks on ground targets, and specialized fighter planes later emerged, armies had to address the issue of defending troops against aerial attacks. Given the mobile nature of warfare, it was necessary to mount anti-aircraft weapons on a durable chassis so they could accompany advancing armored or motorized columns. Even before World War I, the first attempts were made to create a self-propelled cannon to destroy enemy balloons, and later increasingly sophisticated systems emerged, often built on tank chassis. In the context of World War II, military anti-aircraft defense became a necessity and maintained its significance through the Cold War to the present day. A fundamental turning point came in the post-World War II period when guided anti-aircraft missiles began to spread in armies.
