The author skillfully opens the Psalms as an important source of Christian spirituality. Although the individual Old Testament Psalms differ in content, they have one thing in common – they are a prayer. The one who speaks in them thanks for the fulfillment of requests. They admire the beauty of the world created by God. They are aware of their transgressions. They celebrate God's wisdom, which we can follow in our lives. The Psalms present to God the entirety of human life – our joys and sorrows, our fears, sins, anger, and passion. Even how we experience our freedom. God embraces all of this. That is why the Psalms play such an important role in Judaism and Christianity. However, according to Guardini, the Psalms are not just poetry with strong imagery and in a beautiful ancient style. "They are, first and foremost, God's word – the word by which God responds to the words of the one who has allowed himself to be captivated by it. They thus become a revelation leading to salvation." Those who pray them begin to accept their words as their own. They start to see their heart not as they would like it to be, but as it truly is – including its hidden corners and depths. The Psalms urge us to turn to God with their help and say to Him: Lord, I come to you with everything that is within me. Look upon it and grant me your light.
