The Biographical Dictionary Martyrs and Victims for Christ captures the life stories of Catholic Christians of all nationalities living in the Czech lands who violently perished during the two totalitarian regimes of the 20th century. The persecution of priests, nuns, religious brothers, Catholic laypeople, and in many cases entire families and religious communities is documented in 260 detailed biographical entries. A valuable part of the publication is also 239 portrait photographs of martyrs from both Czech and foreign sources. The dictionary guide is divided into three sections. The first covers the rampage of Nazi occupiers during World War II (1938–1945). The second recalls the priestly and religious victims of the so-called wild expulsion of Germans in 1945. The third part gathers information about the victims of the communist regime (1948–1989). The book, which involved forty authors under the leadership of Jan Stříbrný, is the most comprehensive work to date on the witnesses of faith and victims among Catholic Christians in our country.
