He studied law, economics, theology and statistics and worked as a lawyer and politician. He helped establish the European Coal and Steel Community, the Council of Europe and NATO. His declaration of 9 May 1950 laid the foundations for post-war European integration, based on reconciliation and trust between nations, cooperation, shared interests and a measured limitation of sovereignty.
