The diaries of military chaplain Guy Mayfield are an extraordinarily valuable testimony to the fates of British, Czech, and other RAF pilots in the years 1940 and 1941. We gain insight into a time when none of them could be certain of victory in the war or even that they would see another day. Yet these pilots rose each day, flew, and fought for the freedom of their country and all of Europe. Mayfield's writings are laconic, powerful, and personal. The chaplain admires the pilots' performances in combat against the Luftwaffe, only to share their fears, financial and family problems, and emotions that cannot be controlled even in this conflict. Pilots come to him, leave – and suddenly they are gone. At that moment, he too fights his human struggle: "No amount of my prayers will keep them in the skies.
