Description
Professor Lejeune uniquely connected his scientific aspirations with fidelity to the ethical principles of medical work. Jérôme Lejeune made significant discoveries regarding the beginning of human life in the 1960s, making him one of the fathers of modern genetics. He is best known for his discovery of the causes of so-called Down syndrome (trisomy 21). He exclusively used his discovery to help, not eliminate, people born or conceived with this intellectual disability. Lejeune dedicated all his time and energy to his patients and their families. He defended the lives of the unborn for both ethical and scientific reasons. He lectured and traveled the world, gaining many friends due to his stances and perhaps losing even more. As a man of science and faith, he stood by his principles and withstood prevailing social and media pressures. His daughter Clara presents him to us not only as a scientist but also as a happy husband, father, a Christian of deep faith, and a man with insight and an unparalleled sense of humor. His humility and penetrating views continue to resonate with many to this day.
