Description
The seven penitential psalms, the most famous of which are Psalms 51 (Miserere) and 130 (De profundis), share the theme of remorse for sins and the desire for God's forgiveness. The prayer of these psalms turns a person away from helplessness and despair. Before God, we do not need to play any roles, hide our pain or guilt. When we express what is weak and seemingly unworthy of God's touch within us, we can be healed. This small publication contains the text and interpretation of the penitential psalms, short prayers, and four perspectives on how to read these psalms: as the prayer of Israel, Jesus, the church, and the individual. This practical guide will serve for personal use as well as for reading in prayer communities and during Bible study sessions. It is particularly suitable for personal prayer on Fridays, during Lent, and in preparation for the sacrament of reconciliation. Several practical tips are also provided at the end.
