Description
Anka Kolesárová (1928–1944), a martyr of purity and the first beatified Slovak woman who was not a nun, became a victim of a war crime committed against her by a soldier of the Red Army at the end of World War II. Dozens of people in our country experienced stories like hers... The Red Army was advancing westward at the end of the war. There was much to fear, so the Kolesárová family hid in the cellar. One of the Red Army soldiers, while inspecting the cellar, singled out the beautiful sixteen-year-old girl and ordered her to come with him. When she refused, he told her that she would either go with him and sleep with him or he would kill her. And so it happened. When she refused to submit, he allowed her a brief farewell with her father and then shot her. 'The story of this ordinary girl is not far from our stories. Her heroic courage to sacrifice her life for Christian values, the inner beauty, and dignity of a woman gave hope to many to live in purity and fight daily battles,' says Father Pavol Hudák, the initiator of her beatification.
