Description
The book connects two famous texts by Viktor E. Frankl (1905–1997), a psychiatrist with Czech roots and the founder of logotherapy. The manuscript 'Psychologist Experiences a Concentration Camp' was created in less than two weeks in December 1945. In it, the author describes the phases of dehumanization that prisoners had to go through and how the spiritual dimension of life supported them. The play 'Synchronization in Birkenwald,' written in 1948 in an impressive sketch-like manner, is both a conceptual and literary-dramatic experiment. It intertwines Frankl's personal experiences from the extermination camp with an imaginary reflection and a lively dialogue among three philosophers close to him – Socrates, Spinoza, and Kant. According to Frankl, there always remains a space of freedom and responsibility within a person that must not be relinquished at any cost, even in extreme situations: 'Nothing can defeat a person who consciously wishes to have a life goal.'
