Description

It has been exactly half a century since an unpredictable natural disaster prematurely cut short the efforts of the Czechoslovak expedition Peru 1970. An uncompromisingly destructive avalanche of ice and rocks caused by a massive earthquake in the South American Andes buried the efforts and goals of all fourteen members in the base camp beneath Huascarán. Most of them had grown up climbing among the sandstone towers of Skalák, and for many, it was their first contact with high mountains. The warning signs came two weeks earlier when one of the expedition members tragically lost his life. The devastating tremor in the mountains claimed the lives of a total of seventy thousand Quechua Indians in a matter of minutes. However, the heart of the Andes continues to beat. After years, professional climbers and passionate mountaineers picked up the broken thread. The book offers, along with a reprint of a collection of photographs by Vilém Heckel, a dialogue between the moment and eternity, stories of generations united by friendship, courage, and tragedy, but above all, the strength and resilience of the human spirit and the triumph of an idea that began to write its first lines in distant Peru over fifty years ago...
