Description
The vanishing world of the traditional life of the Akha mountain ethnic group in the harsh and remote part of southwestern China near the border with Burma creates a colorful backdrop for Lisa See's novel. It's hard to imagine that as recently as the end of the last century, the local inhabitants were unaware of electricity, cars, or telephones. Life in the tea mountains was and is tightly linked to a unique type of tea, which nearly fell into oblivion during the tumultuous years following the rise of Red China. However, green gold has regained attention in the 21st century, and the interest in pu-erh tea has dramatically changed the lives of all who come into contact with it. Pu-erh is also the key to the fate of the main character Li-jen and her family. The indestructible bond of maternal love weaves through the entire story, where completely different worlds of isolated mountains and globalized metropolises collide.
